Mario Kart World 1.1.0 Update Adds Online Play, LAN, and More Ahead of Launch

Mario Kart World just got its first update before launch! Version 1.1.0 brings online multiplayer, LAN support, new Free Roam features, and early character unlocks—just in time for the Nintendo Switch 2 release.

Mario Kart World Drops a Surprise Update Before Launch

Even before its official green light, Mario Kart World is already getting fine-tuned. Nintendo has rolled out version 1.1.0 of the game ahead of its big debut alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. Some lucky early birds who managed to snag the console and game early have already begun downloading the update—and it brings a ton of solid upgrades.

What’s in the 1.1.0 Update?

The patch includes a bunch of features that probably should’ve been there from the jump, but hey—better early than late. Here's what's new:

Popular Games

  • Camera support for the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in camera

  • Online multiplayer is now officially a thing

  • LAN Play can be enabled right from the title screen

  • Improved Free Roam mode, now with nearby player icons so you’re not flying solo

  • Time Attack updates let you upload and download ghost data

And for anyone planning couch co-op sessions, the update also makes multiplayer smoother when more than three players join in, especially in the “Everyone” mode. Also worth noting: Nintendo removed the course selection timer for LAN and local play, which should make things more chill for groups trying to pick a track without the pressure.

Free Roam Gets Friendlier

Free Roam mode is one of Mario Kart World’s big new features, and it just got more social. Now, you’ll be able to see other nearby racers on the map, which makes the open-world-style exploration a lot more interactive. It’s a small change, but one that should add some extra life to the mode.

More Characters Right from the Start

Another bonus in this patch? More characters are unlocked earlier in the game. While Nintendo hasn’t dropped a full list just yet, it sounds like players will have more options right out of the gate, which is always welcome in a franchise that thrives on its colorful cast.

Online Play Finally Confirmed

Many fans were surprised online play wasn’t listed as a base feature, but it’s officially here now. So whether you’re racing strangers or planning tournaments with friends, you won’t have to wait until a later update to take things online.

Nintendo’s Planning a Smooth Launch

Releasing a patch before the game’s even out might seem like a weird move, but it’s a sign that Nintendo is aiming for a smooth-as-butter launch on day one. With hype levels through the roof and the Switch 2 set to release on the same day, this update helps set the stage for what could be one of the biggest Mario Kart launches to date.

While this patch clears up some early gaps, fans are already speculating about future updates. One rumor suggests larger engine sizes (maybe even 300cc?) could be on the way in a future patch.
