Overwatch 2 Loot Boxes: Here’s How They Work in Season 15
Blizzard is bringing loot boxes back to Overwatch 2, but with a twist! Find out how to earn them, what’s inside, and why they’re making a comeback in Season 15.

Loot boxes are making a surprise return to Overwatch 2, and game director Aaron Keller has explained why. While they were one of the most controversial features in the original game, Blizzard has decided to bring them back—but in a different way.
Why Are Loot Boxes Returning?
According to Keller, the main reason for their return is that Overwatch 2 wasn’t rewarding enough, especially for free-to-play players. Speaking to PCGamesN, he stated that the dev team wanted players to feel like their time in the game was better rewarded, and loot boxes offer a way to give out more cosmetics in a fun and generous way.
How Do Loot Boxes Work in Overwatch 2?
Unlike the original game, these loot boxes won’t be available for purchase. Instead, players can earn them through:
- Free & Premium Battle Passes
- Weekly Missions
- Limited-Time Events
- The Returning Weekly Tracker System
The items inside will include many of the cosmetics from the store, but they’ll be a season behind, meaning current Battle Pass and shop skins won’t immediately be available in loot boxes.
Overwatch 2’s Big Season 15 Updates
Besides loot boxes, Overwatch 2 is adding some major features:
- New Stadium Mode
- Two new heroes coming this year
- Freja, a Danish DPS, debuts in Season 16
- Map voting & hero bans so players can choose maps and block certain enemies
- A new perk system, letting players equip new abilities
With all these updates, Blizzard is clearly making big changes to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and rewarding for its players!
