Xbox Game Pass Adds The Alters: High-Rated Sci-Fi Survival Game Launches June 13

The Alters launches day-one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with strong early reviews.

Microsoft has now included The Alters to its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate service, launching as a day-one title on Friday, June 13. This survival game with sci-fi tone comes from 11 Bit Studios, a Polish game studio that’s already known for award-winning titles. The release is now available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and through cloud for Ultimate subscribers. It’s already the 68th game added to Game Pass Ultimate this year, and seventh for the month of June.

11 Bit Studios, based in Warsaw, earlier developed This War of Mine and both Frostpunk games. These titles got big praise over the years, with Frostpunk 2 even winning Best Sim / Strategy Game at The Game Awards 2024. Now, The Alters continues their direction into emotionally driven, survival-type experiences. The new title is seeing strong critical results so far. According to OpenCritic, it has a current average of 86, with 93% of reviewers recommending it. It’s actually the highest-rated day-one Game Pass title since Blue Prince from April, which had a slightly better score at 89.

The game tells the story of Jan Dolski, a solitary worker stuck on a deadly planet. The sun here gives out deadly radiation, so he needs to keep moving in the shadows to survive. Using a strange material called Rapidium, Jan can create other versions of himself—called "Alters"—based on different paths his life could have taken. Each Alter has different traits or jobs, like being a scientist or a technician, and they help him survive.

But these characters aren’t just tools. They have different personalities and goals. Sometimes they won’t agree with each other, which adds conflict and choices. Managing their moods and tasks becomes just as important as building your base or gathering supplies. The game also features side-scrolling base management similar to titles like XCOM or Fallout Shelter, adding another layer of decision-making.

Game Pass Standard Users Might Wait Longer

At the moment, The Alters is only for PC and Ultimate users of Game Pass. If Microsoft follows its usual release patterns, the game might not show up on Game Pass Standard until sometime between the end of 2025 and maybe mid-2026. Usually third-party games stay on Ultimate and PC tiers for a year or so before moving to Standard, though this depends on how the deal was made.

So, if players on Standard Game Pass are looking forward to trying The Alters, they may have to wait at least six months or more—unless the licensing deal was shorter or longer than usual.

With more big games on the horizon for Xbox Game Pass, including The Outer Worlds 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded, Microsoft is keeping up its momentum in delivering top-notch releases straight to subscribers on day one. The Alters, with its thoughtful concept and strong execution, is a strong part of that effort.
