Epic Games, the game developer, and publisher behind the popular eSports title, Fortnite has just made an important announcement. As part of this announcement, the company noted that it is not going to hold any in-person eSports tournaments/events. It will not hold any traditional eSports events in 2021. The company outlined obvious reasons for this move including the global pandemic. Epic Games does not want to take any chances with the safety and health of top Fortnite players. Fortnite not holding in-person events for a long time; details
Looking at the announcement, it is interesting to note that Epic Games has not put an end date to this shift. So, we are not sure if the trend of online events will be limited to 2021 or extend to 2022 and beyond. Epic Games also issued a statement as part of the announcement to share its perspective. The company stated, “Our intent is to eventually hold in-person tournaments again, but our priority for any such event is the health and safety of our players and staff.” It went on to add, “With so much unknown about what is practical and safe, we do not plan to hold in-person events in 2021, including a Fortnite World Cup.”
The game developer will share more updates around its plans for the traditional events in the future. Though, it is likely that the company is waiting for things to settle down along with a proper vaccine. It went on to state that the Fortnite Championship Series (FNCS) will continue in a new online format next year. The FNCS is set to start on February 4 with the aim to offer enough time for players to get habitual with changes made in the game in Season 5.
Finally, Epic Games also noted that it will increase the number of unique and weekly tournaments throughout 2021. This will ensure that players are engaged between the different seasons of the FNCS. The announcement comes just days after Epic Games shared details around its latest Season 5 update along with several in-game events.
