Insomniac’s Wolverine game will reportedly be M-rated

Just like the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game in 2009.

Insomniac Games is currently developing a Wolverine game and a new report says that the developers are targeting a mature rating. There’s also claims that the game could release by next year.

Wolverine game going for a "Hard R" rating

This comes from Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb who shared the details on a live stream on Thursday. He shared these details about the Wolverine game which is aiming for a “Hard R” rating.

“Hard R is what they’re going for… that’s one of the concepts that I’ve heard,” Grubb said.

He added, “I think an M-rated Wolverine could work, I think an M-rated superhero game could work, and this is probably the right character.”

Grubb also clarified that the studio is going with a narrative with no links to the Fox movies. “They will [also] avoid having any links or anything that evokes the Fox movies – they want it to stand on its own. I was trying to nail down the setting and have heard it will start before he joins the X-Men, which also makes sense for a Wolverine game…,” he added.

He continued, “Maybe the surprising thing for me is that I’ve heard two different dates… I’ve heard as early as fall 2024, which would be wild. Insomniac is putting out Spider-Man 2 this fall… I’ve also heard internally they’re still very much talking about 2025, so let’s not be surprised if that’s what happens.”

It would certainly be an impressive achievement if Insomniac can get two major Marvel games out the door in that span of time.

“But if anyone can pull off releasing two major, triple-A, massive games in back-to-back years, it is Insomniac,” Grubb said.

"Creating something truly special", says Insomniac’s franchise strategy head

Sony announced the Wolverine game during the PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021. Spider-Man 2 was announced at that same event.

Ryan Schneider, head of franchise strategy and studio relations at Insomnia said at that time about the Wolverine game that it was “very early in development.”

However, he claimed, “Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay, the team is already creating something truly special.”
