Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 Ghost in the Shell Anime by Science SARU

A new "Ghost in the Shell" anime is coming, and it will air in 2026. They told this news during Anime Expo and also dropped a teaser clip. It’s kind of looking different from before but also something in it still feels the same. The new series is being made by Science SARU, that same studio who made DanDaDan and Ping Pong the Animation. Their animation style’s like this mix between hand-drawn and digital, so it always looking unique.

They say this version will follow the original manga by Masamune Shirow more closely. The teaser even showed characters and little things like manhole cover, fans noticed it’s looking almost exactly like in the manga pages. That’s kind of a big thing, because older anime versions changed so many parts, and not everyone was happy about that.

A Fresh Start for a Classic Story

The creator Masamune Shirow also said something about this being the “first part of a second generation.” It might sound a little confusing, but it means even if someone hasn’t seen the old Ghost in the Shell shows, they can still understand this one. This is actually the tenth time the manga has been turned into an anime or movie. 

The story again will talk about big ideas — artificial intelligence, identity, control, future tech and such things. But now these ideas are not just sci-fi, they are starting to feel like real-life too. The teaser gives off a serious mood, but there’s also some new touches in it, more modern maybe. They didn’t say when it’s coming exactly though, they just said the storyboards and scripts are still being worked on.

A New Director, A Familiar Studio

This anime is being made by Bandai Namco Filmworks together with Science SARU. Mokochan, who was an animator for DanDaDan, is now doing his first time as director. Toh Enjoe, the one from Godzilla Singular Point, is writing the script. Also, Shūhei Handa, who worked on Little Witch Academia, is doing the character designs and animation direction.

Even though it’s still in early work, fans are already expecting this to be one of the big anime releases of 2026. Maybe it’s gonna bring back old fans and also pull in new people. Let’s hope this time it gives something really strong that fits with the name Ghost in the Shell.
