Netflix’s Gears of War movie edges closer to reality with director talks ongoing and a finished script. Production may begin as early as late 2025.
Netflix seems finally ready to get the long-gestating Gears of War movie moving under action director David Leitch, even if the journey here’s been far from smooth.
Netflix grabbed the Gears of War rights in November 2022, planning both a live-action film and an adult-oriented animated series. Jon Spaihts—who wrote Dune and Doctor Strange—has been chipping away at the script since early 2023, trying to give Marcus Fenix’s fight against the Locust Horde real emotional heft. The story’s shaping up nicely, though plenty still needs ironing out.
Director Negotiations and A History of Setbacks
David Leitch—best known for Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and co-directing John Wick—is in talks to direct and produce through his 87North banner with partner Kelly McCormick. Nothing’s signed yet, but insiders say Leitch’s stunt background and flair for action could bring the visceral punch fans want. If it happens, expect a style that’s as kinetic as the games themselves.
This movie first stirred to life back in 2007 at New Line Cinema, with Stuart Beattie and Len Wiseman attached—only for budget issues and studio reshuffles to shelve it. Universal tried again in 2016 under Scott Stuber, but that stalled too. Two decades of rights bouncing and creative turnover have made the project feel almost cursed.
Collaboration with The Coalition
To keep authenticity, Leitch and McCormick plan close work with The Coalition, the studio behind recent Gears titles. They aim to preserve the series’ cover-based combat and grim look, while Spaihts balances spectacle with real stakes so it doesn’t feel shallow.
Casting Chatter
No one’s officially cast yet, but Dave Bautista has lobbied to play Marcus Fenix—sparking debates on whether his build suits the grizzled sergeant. Fan wishlists toss around names like Josh Brolin or Javier Bardem, though that’s purely hypothetical for now.
With Leitch in talks and Spaihts’ script reportedly locked, production might kick off in late 2025—if all the pieces finally fall into place. Until Netflix gives a proper green light or teases a first look at an event like the Xbox Games Showcase, fans stay hopeful that this long-awaited adaptation will at last breakthrough.
