Paru Itagaki’s new anime SANDA premieres this October, blending sci-fi and Santa myths, with an early screening set for Anime Expo 2025
SANDA, which is a new anime based on the manga by Paru Itagaki (you know, the one who made BEASTARS), is finally getting close to release. They dropped a new teaser trailer that says the show’s gonna start on October 3 at 25:53 in Japan, which is basically 1:53 AM on October 4. That’s pretty late, but it’s not unusual for anime.
Also, before the actual airing starts, the first episode is going to be shown at Anime Expo on July 4. And yeah, Paru Itagaki is going there, along with director Tomohisa Shimoyama and producer Kohei Sakita. So fans who go there might see something exciting.
Santa, Curses, and Children in Charge?
This anime got a pretty strange idea. It’s like… set in future Japan, where kids are kinda more powerful than adults because the birth rate is really low. In this world, Santa Claus has been sealed away, and now people think Christmas is just a fairy tale or something that used to happen.
The main boy, Kazushige Sanda, finds out there’s something weird about himself. His classmate, Shiori Fuyumura, says he got a curse. And not just that—she thinks it’s somehow related to her missing friend. She even plans to kill him. It’s dark and strange, yeah, but there’s also some mystery that makes it kinda exciting.
Voice Actors and the Team Behind It
They also told who’s voicing the characters now:
- Ayumu Murase is playing Sanda
- Hiroki Tochi is Santa Claus (no, seriously)
- Umeka Shoji will be Shiori Fuyumura
- Anna Nagase as Ichie Ono
- Yuki Shin as Hitoshi Amaya
- Misato Matsuoka doing Niko Kazao
And about the staff—it’s a pretty strong lineup. Tomohisa Shimoyama is directing it at Science SARU, which also does DAN DA DAN and its Season 2 comes in July 2025. The script is being written by Kimiko Ueno, and Masamichi Ishiyama is drawing the characters and leading animation. Tomoyuki Tanaka is doing music, so there’ll probably be some emotional parts too.
The SANDA manga already ended this July after running for three years in Weekly Shonen Champion, with 14 volumes total. Interestingly, the anime was announced the same day the manga ended. So it’s like a smooth handover from paper to screen.
After what BEASTARS did, this new one from Itagaki could also leave a mark. It’s got action, weird future stuff, and even a twist on Santa Claus. If you’re into anime that’s not afraid to be different, SANDA might be worth watching when October comes.
