The Vermillion Mask Manga to Receive Anime Adaptation Announced at Anime Expo

  • July 06, 2025 (UPDATED: July 06, 2025 16:01 IST)

A dark fantasy anime based on The Vermillion Mask manga is in production, featuring a cursed journey, new trailer, and creative team behind hit series

At Anime Expo, Yomiuri TV suddenly came out and dropped the big news “The Vermillion Mask”, the manga by Dr.Poro and Nabana Naba, is turning into anime. They didn’t say much. We don’t know if it’s a show or movie, and there’s no date either. Just a short trailer (with English subs, which is good) and some nice visuals showing what it might look like when finished.

The story is about a young Peruvian boy Peru. He was learning mask-making, like really just starting. But one day, he puts on a strange cursed mask—and suddenly, he loses control. And then, his master and others are dead—killed by him. But not like he wanted that to happen. After that horrible moment, guilt was too much. So Peru decided to go out and destroy all the dangerous masks his master had made before. During the journey, he met many people. Some people are kind, but others aren’t. Some even want to kill him. But deep down, the whole thing is more about fixing himself, not just the masks. And maybe trying to fix the world too, if that possible.

Big Names Behind the Scenes Join This Dark Fantasy

Now the anime is not being made by some random team. Tetsuaki Watanabe, who was the director for BLUELOCK Season 1, he’s doing this too. Gai Hazako helped him as an assistant. The structure and overall writing is getting done by Daisuke Ōhigashi—he did stuff on Fate/Strange Fake. Then character designs, that’s by Hisashi Higashijima, yeah the guy from Mashle: Magic and Muscles. Sound director is Fumiyuki Go, and music comes from Arisa Okehazama. She did The Apothecary Diaries, so you know music’s in good hands.

The authors, both of them, also drew something new to celebrate the anime. Plus, there’s a website and even an official X account already up. And yes, it’s in English—so, they’re clearly thinking global audience here.

The manga started back in 2021 in Young King Ours. It already has seven volumes out. Volume 8 is releasing this Monday. The anime, no release date yet. Looks like they’re really taking their time. Which might be good, actually. Because this looks like one of those darker anime stories with a lot of emotion and maybe even a surprise hit if done well.
