Max Payne is back. Developers behind the iconic franchise released a statement on Wednesday that a remake of the first two games from the series will be made. Remedy Entertainment studio will collaborate with Rockstar Games to remake Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said that the studio is getting a “chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways'. Sam Houser, the founder of Rockstar Games, said they were thrilled when Remedy approached the studio for a remake.

Rockstar Games became the publisher for the first game after the departure of the original publisher. Gathering of Developers shut up shop in 2001 and Rockstar Games became the publisher for Max Payne. Rockstar Games then published Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne in 2003. The studio went on to solely develop Max Payne 3 which was released in 2012. Max Payne 3 received positive reviews on Metacritic with a Metascore of 87. The game garnered “generally favourable reviews” with a 7.8 user rating as well.

Rockstar Games will be funding the new remake that is set to release as a single game. The game would combine the narrative of Max Payne and Max Payne 2. The game would release on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Remedy also specified that the budget would be similar to the budget of other big titles by Remedy. The AAA title budget along with the information that the remake would solely be for new-gen consoles states the ambition behind the remake. The remake, as per the news release, is currently under the “concept development stage.”

Remedy Entertainment would also be using its own game engine called Northlight for the untitled Max Payne remake. Northlight was used in other Remedy games such as Control and Quantum Break. Remedy Entertainment is also the studio behind the hit 2010 game Alan Wake. Alan Wake II was announced at The Game Awards 2021 and is scheduled for a release in 2023.
