The success doesn't stop at digital sales. Physical copies of Clair Obscur aren't readily available due to sheer demand, indicating solid console sales in the process.
In a turn of events taking place in the gaming world, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has beaten Oblivion Remastered in some categories on Steam. The indie game from French developer Sandfall Interactive now has even more global players than Bethesda’s big-hitter remaster, as well as more concurrent on the platform.

Propaganda's Clair Obscur, which followed the surprise launch of Oblivion Remastered in late April by only a few days, has also been making a boom. The game, which is both new and low profile, has already surpassed Oblivion Remastered in the Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart. During the writing of this article more than 112,000 players were actively grinding away at Expedition 33, as compared with Oblivion's 78,000.
Whereas Bethesda's re-release of the original 2006 RPG still retains the all-time player highpoint — slightly above 216,000 — Clair Obscur keeps on gaining traction. Its critical acclaim is also remarkable, with an average review score of 92 on OpenCritic, ranking among the most critically successful releases of 2025.
The success doesn't stop at digital sales. Physical copies of Clair Obscur aren't readily available due to sheer demand, indicating solid console sales in the process. Sandfall Interactive also confirmed the sales of more than one million copies of the game, excluding distribution through services like Xbox Game Pass.
Conversely, Bethesda indicates Oblivion Remastered has hit more than four million players on all platforms, including subscriptions.
But direct comparison is made impossible since both publishers have different definitions of success. Nevertheless, one thing is sure — April ended on a high for RPG fans, with both titles making the world sit up and take notice.
Sandfall Interactive has already deployed the initial patch for Expedition 33, one that focused on early bugs specifically. With both games slated to continue seeing support, gamers have a lot to be excited about as these RPG giants continue to grow.
