Ubisoft Braces for Backlash Ahead of Assassin’s Creed Shadows Release

Ubisoft braces for backlash as Assassin’s Creed Shadows faces criticism over Yasuke’s role as a protagonist.

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows set to launch soon, you’d expect Ubisoft to be fully focused on delivering a polished experience. However, the company is not only preparing for the game’s release but also bracing for the wave of online backlash heading its way.

The controversy stems from one of the game’s protagonists—Yasuke, an African samurai. While his inclusion is historically based, critics in certain circles have accused Ubisoft of pushing a “woke agenda.” Given the volatile nature of online discourse, Ubisoft is taking proactive measures to shield its developers from harassment.

Ubisoft’s Plan to Combat Harassment

According to reports from French outlet BFM TV, Ubisoft has implemented strategies to protect its team from online abuse. Developers have been advised to avoid discussing the game publicly or disclosing their involvement until tensions subside.

Additionally, the company will monitor social media for harmful content targeting its staff or the game itself, with the possibility of pursuing defamation lawsuits if necessary. Ubisoft has also committed to providing legal and psychological support for any employees facing harassment.

The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Controversy

Ever since Yasuke was revealed as a protagonist, some critics have accused Ubisoft of sidelining a Japanese lead in favor of “forced diversity.” However, Yasuke’s story isn’t new to gaming—he has appeared in multiple Koei Tecmo titles before. The backlash seems to be fueled more by the ongoing anti-“woke” rhetoric than by any legitimate concerns about historical accuracy.

Given the rise of toxic debates in gaming spaces, Ubisoft’s approach to preemptively addressing harassment makes sense. But this is just one of the company’s many challenges.

Ubisoft’s Bigger Battle

The controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows is only one of Ubisoft’s concerns. The company has been grappling with internal struggles, declining profits, and canceled projects. This isn’t just another Assassin’s Creed release—it’s a pivotal moment that could significantly impact Ubisoft’s future.
