The Witcher 3: What's the REDKit mod and when would it be available?

After years of limited modding support, The Witcher 3 is finally getting its first comprehensive modding tools. This announcement comes months after CD Projekt Red revealed plans to enhance The Witcher 3's modding capabilities.

CDPR unveiled the news today, setting a release date for the new REDKit modding tools on May 21. The REDKit suite is built on the game's Red Engine, which also powered previous titles in the series and Cyberpunk 2077. The shift away from the proprietary engine towards Epic Games' Unreal Engine is expected to streamline development significantly.

Although The Witcher 3 has had modding tools since its early days, they were limited in scope and access to the game's deeper mechanics—an issue that the new REDKit aims to address. REDKit for The Witcher 3 is set to debut on May 21, and best of all, it will be completely free for all PC players to enjoy!

CDPR recently conducted a trial period for its revamped modding tools, which included the launch of a Steam workshop page for The Witcher 3. Although the workshop currently lacks any mods and was primarily for testing purposes, it hints at potential future developments. Mods play a vital role in extending a game's lifespan, as seen with Bethesda's enthusiastic support for them.

While The Witcher 3 already boasts some impressive mods, the enhanced capabilities of the REDKit are poised to unleash even greater creativity among modders. With the improvements introduced in the next-gen upgrade, we may eventually witness the creation of custom campaigns, quests, and more within The Witcher 3's rich world.
