The Runner-up Curse: Mavi and his inspirational journey
Harmandeep "Mavi" Singh started his esports journey with team Indian Tigers in 2019. During the PUBG Mobile India Tour 2019, his team showcased impressive performance, finishing as runner-up. This marked the beginning of what fans dubbed Mavi's "runner-up curse."
Rise with Orange Rock
After leaving the Indian Tigers, Mavi joined Orange Rock on a good salary. In early 2020, he played in the PUBG Mobile Club Open (PMCO) Spring Split, again securing the 2nd position. His exceptional grenade skills earned him nicknames like "zone magnet" and "man with the golden hand."
Performance in PMPL and PMWL
In the PUBG Mobile Pro League (PMPL), Mavi's team performed well but finished 4th on the leaderboard. They qualified for the PUBG Mobile World League (PMWL) 2020, where Mavi, along with Gill, Viru, and Scout, almost clinched victory. Despite an impressive run, they finished 2nd after being overtaken by Bigetron Red Aliens on the last day. This result was a significant moment for the Indian Gaming Community (IGC).
The Ban and Aftermath
Following the PMWL, PUBG Mobile was banned in India due to security concerns, causing many teams to disband. Mavi faced uncertainty about continuing in esports or pursuing other plans.
Transition to BGMI
With the launch of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Soul Esports announced a roster including Mavi, Scout, Mortal, Regaltos, and Viper. However, this lineup failed to perform, leading to its disbandment. Mavi and Scout then formed a new lineup with Gill, Viru, and Ultron, but this also did not succeed. Despite suggestions to switch to content creation, Mavi remained committed to esports.
A New Chapter with Global Esports
In June 2023, Global Esports (GE) announced a new BGMI roster featuring Mavi and three young talents: Slug, Beast, and NinjaJod. This decision revitalized Mavi's career. The team performed well in several tournaments and secured good positions. In April 2024, they won the Skyesports Mobile Open 2024, setting the stage for BGIS 2024.
BGIS 2024: A Close Call
During BGIS 2024, GE showcased their potential and dominance, qualifying for the Grand Finals by securing 1st position in the semi-finals. They started the finals strong, ending the first day in 2nd position. On the second day, they took the lead. However, despite a decent performance on the third day, they lost the top spot to TX. In the final match, GE needed 16 points to win but fell short after a tough fight with Aaru Gaming, finishing as runners-up once again.
Despite the heartbreak of another 2nd place finish, Mavi's determination and leadership have been commendable. His journey from Indian Tigers to Global Esports reflects his resilience and passion for esports. The community remains proud of Mavi and hopeful for his future successes.
