Hayao Miyazaki's decade-old clip has gained relevance once again against AI-generated art. With Studio Ghibli also reportedly filing a case against ChatGPT, his words "an insult to life itself" hit even harder.

Miyazaki Saw This Coming
Back in 2016, Miyazaki was shown an AI-generated animation, and let’s just say, he didn’t hold back. He dismissed it as "devoid of humanity" completely rejecting the idea of AI in animation. At the time, it might’ve seemed extreme, but fast forward to 2025,with AI tools mass-producing Ghibli-style art without human input and companies like Meta using art to train their own Ai’s. Safe to say, he was onto something.

The latest picture/art trends revolves around AI-generated Ghibli-style images which have been flooding social media, and while some people think they look cool, others aren’t happy about AI pulling from real artists’ work without permission. Now, Studio Ghibli is reportedly taking legal action against OpenAI, arguing that these AI models are trained on copyrighted material without consent and they’re not the only ones fighting back.
Case Against Ai
This isn’t just about one studio vs. AI; it’s about the entire creative industry. If Ghibli wins, it could lead to stricter regulations on how AI uses existing art. If they lose? AI-generated content might become even harder to regulate, and more studios could end up in the same battle.
