Destiny 2 Edge of Fate: How to Unlock and Open All Red Chests on Kepler

Unlock all red chests in Destiny 2 Edge of Fate! Learn how to get every Kepler ability, complete Strangelet quests, and farm Tier 2 loot easily.

In Destiny 2: Edge of Fate, Bungie did an amazing job with balancing traversal upgrades, which in return have awesome loot. There are four red chests on Kepler, and they each require a particular Kepler ability, which you can only acquire by completing their Strangelet questline. With each one, you'll receive Tier 2 gear. These red chests only appear on the map once you unlock the corresponding ability, so the game nicely couples progression and exploration.

Mattermorph Chests

  • Prompt: “Requires undiscovered technology.”
  • Need: Mattermorph, which reshapes the environment.
  • Unlock: During the Outer Steppes Strangelet quest ("Morphology"), after completing previous quest chains.
  • Open: Touch the fungal‑looking growths around the chest after unlocking the upgrade, then open it.

Pro-Level Tips

  • It’s better to do the Strangelet quests one at a time and in order. That way, the right ability gets unlocked properly.
  • Keep checking your map. Once you unlock a chest-related ability, those specific red chests start appearing.
  • After unlocking, you can return and open the same chests again. They’ll keep dropping Tier 2 gear; no need to redo any puzzles or steps.

Bungie really did a nice job here. Each chest feels like it belongs to the ability it needs. Matterspark chests are fast and electric; Rosetta ones are more about language and discovery. Relocator makes you smartly use space, and Mattermorph adds a cool puzzle feel. Opening these chests isn’t just about getting gear. It’s tied into the game’s world and design. It feels more earned and not like random rewards thrown at you. That makes the grind feel more satisfying, even if you're replaying.

To cover every Tier 2 equipment in Kepler, you need to complete four Strangelet questlines. All of them provide you with one of the skills needed to unlock a certain type of red chest. The cycle is straightforward: do a quest, get the skill, and open the chest. However, it does not seem primitive, as it relates well to the plot and mechanics of the game. It is a highly satisfying system when you are a more experienced Guardian, where it takes into consideration both your time and your elected skills.
