The Last of Us Part II Remastered Adds Chronological Mode for a Fresh Narrative Experience
The Last of Us Part II Remastered introduces Chronological Mode, letting players relive the story in true timeline order with new emotional pacing.

Naughty Dog has brought something new for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, a thing called Chronological Mode. It’s been released with the new July update 2025 and will let players go through the story from beginning to end as it really happened in the timeline. This is a mode which change the pace and emotions differently than the original one.
Original game was telling the story in ways that moved around in time a lot. There were flashbacks and switches in character. That way was made for building the story emotional and dramatic. However, fans have wondered about how the game might feel if the story was told from first to last in the right time.
Now, Naughty Dog made that possible. In Chronological Mode, you starts where Joel and Ellie live in Jackson after the first game, and then continue all the way until the game ends. There are no flashback jumps or changes between Abby and Ellie’s parts. It just go in straight line.
Neil Druckmann who directs the game said it wasn’t simple. They had to adjust many part so that it still feels right even without original structure. The gameplay is still same, no change in how fighting works or choices. But now scenes and levels are arranged by how they happen in time.
“This mode isn't replacing anything, just giving people a new way to look,” said Druckmann. “It’s for those who want something different from what they've already seen.”
The mode is only coming for the PS5 version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and will not be seen on PS4 version at all.
Included in Update and Extra Additions
Chronological Mode is part of an update for the Remastered version. In this update there is also smoother performance, extra costumes for Ellie and Abby, and more features for accessibility. If you own the game on PS4, Naughty Dog is letting you upgrade to PS5 version with only $10.
This came after the new roguelike mode called No Return, which was added earlier in the year, giving more to do and variety. With Chronological now, Part II Remastered keeps becoming more like the best edition of the game.
The original style of the story will still be important. But this Chronological Mode is giving a brand new perspective for players to understand a character’s life more clearly. It is a reason to go back into that dark and powerful world again.
