Things are Not Looking Good Regarding GTA 6 Potential Pricing

With GTA 6 expected to launch in 2026, concerns are rising over its potential price. Recent comments from Gearbox’s CEO hint at a possible $80 price tag—raising questions about Take-Two Interactive's pricing strategy. Here's what fans should know.

With Rockstar Games finally unveiling the long-awaited GTA 6 trailer after nearly a year and a half since the first reveal, fans are more hyped than ever. But along with all the excitement, there’s one question quietly creeping into everyone’s mind: how much is GTA 6 going to cost?

And if current industry signals are anything to go by, things aren’t looking particularly encouraging.

A Telling Hint from Gearbox’s CEO

The concern began to grow after a recent online exchange involving Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software. He made a light-hearted but interesting comment about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, expressing excitement about bringing Borderlands 4 to the new console. But things got more serious in the replies.

One fan voiced what many gamers have been thinking: “Randy, this game better not be 80 dollars…”—a clear protest against the ongoing trend of rising game prices.

Pitchford’s reply was straightforward, and somewhat telling. He said:

“A) Not my call.
B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991… and I found a way to make it happen.”

While this might sound like a nostalgic personal story at first, it subtly suggests that a higher price point, for Borderlands 4, at least, is more than likely.

Why This Matters for GTA 6

Here’s where the connection to GTA 6 becomes more relevant. Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands 4, was recently acquired by Take-Two Interactive, the same company that owns Rockstar Games, the studio behind the GTA series. If Randy’s comments reflect broader pricing policies coming from Take-Two, it’s not hard to imagine that GTA 6 could follow suit with a premium price tag.

After all, if there’s one title that could “justify” a high price due to its massive hype and loyal fanbase, it’s GTA 6. The game is already expected to be one of the biggest launches of the decade. It wouldn’t be surprising if Take-Two sees it as the perfect opportunity to push the boundary on pricing.

It’s important to note that nothing is officially confirmed yet. This is all based on hints, industry trends, and a bit of informed speculation. But dismissing it completely wouldn’t be wise either. Game prices have been creeping up over the years—from $59.99 to $69.99—and the $80 threshold doesn’t seem far off now.

With development costs rising and AAA studios aiming for bigger, more cinematic experiences, publishers are clearly looking for ways to increase revenue. And unfortunately, that often means asking players to pay more.

For now, we wait. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that GTA 6 might not just break records in gameplay and popularity, but also in pricing. While fans are ready to dive into Rockstar’s next big world, many are hoping they won’t have to empty their wallets just to get there.
