Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty creator, accused of felony domestic violence and false imprisonment

Justin Roiland, the co-creator of 'Rick and Morty’, is also known for being the creator of the recently launched ‘High on Life’ game.

The creator of High on Life and Rick and Morty has been charged with domestic violence and false imprisonment in relation to an incident that occurred in 2020. Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the cartoon sitcom 'Rick and Morty’ has been charged with domestic assault. Roiland is also known for being the creator of the recently launched ‘High on Life’ game. The incident happened around January 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe, who was once Roiland's girlfriend. 

According to NBC News, which received a copy of the complaint filed through the Orange County Superior Courts, Justin Roiland, 42, was accused in May 2020 with felony domestic violence.

Roiland was arrested in August 2020, and freed on a $50,000 USD bond. He was, however, charged again in October 2020. Roiland entered a ‘not-guilty’ plea to both charges in October 2020.

Since Roiland has been cleared of the charges, there have been numerous court hearings, also including the pre-trial hearings. According to the protective order issued in October 2020, “Roiland is not to harass, threaten or surveil the person named in the protective order”. He is also prohibited from approaching the person within 100 feet.

The order, which would be in effect until October 2023, also ordered Roiland to surrender any firearms he owned or possessed. On January 12, he appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing. During the hearing, Roiland's attorney confirmed that a plea offer is available to him, but no specifics were discussed.

Some of the details of the case are still being withheld from the public under a protective order, along with the affidavit in support of Roiland’s arrest being sealed. The hearing concluded on Thursday with an agreement to reconvene on April 27, 2023.

In addition, Justin Rolland is recognised as the co-creator and voice actor of the Adult Swim series "Rick and Morty." In the well-known sitcom, Roiland voices Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith.
