Sony PlayStation 5 jailbreak is real as Silent Hill demo PT got installed on PS5

The clip ended with the installation of the PT demo on the PS5, the infamous Silent Hill demo from Kojima that sadly never came.

PlayStation 5 has just been jailbroken! Modder Lance McDonald shared the footage on his Twitter channel of a working jailbreak for Sony’s PS5. McDonald is known for releasing an unofficial Bloodborne patch which allowed the game to run at 60 FPS on PS4. While McDonald doesn’t look like he did the jailbreak, he showed the jailbreak in action on PlayStation 5. Check out the clip below.

How it works

This PS5 jailbreak’s functionality is limited at the moment. For starters, it only works with PS5 consoles that have PS5 firmware version 4.03. It’s highly unlikely that people have that same firmware installed anymore since it was released back in October 2021. It got replaced with version 4.5 in December 2021.

McDonald revealed that the creator of this jailbreak says it might be possible to apply this jailbreak on a PS5 console with firmware versions even earlier than 4.03. He also added that this jailbreak would still work only 30% of the time.

If it still sounds great, there’s another catch in store. Apparently, this exploit is just a mere prototype (however impressive) and it only has read/write access at the moment. It does not have the execute access so far. So, McDonald was able to install the PT teaser on his PS5 but he won’t be able to run it at this moment.

Like all mods and exploits, this does create a starting point for other hackers as they’ll love to see how this works and try to work on making it more effective. Sony will not be pleased with news about their PS5’s security being bypassed and if this continues, they’ll try to implement further security in future firmware versions.

PT Demo installed on jailbroken PS5

The jailbreak got McDonald access to a debug menu where he had the option to install a PS4 PKG file. This is essentially a backup installation file of a PS4 game. The clip ended with the installation of the PT demo on the PS5, the infamous Silent Hill demo from Kojima that sadly never came.
