A new look at Attack on Titan reveals the Scout Regiment may have been used by the government to control rebels and maintain fear, not to save humanity
People always said the Scout Regiment was humanity's last hope. The bravest of them all, going out the walls to fight Titans face to face. People saw them as heroes or legends. But when you really think about what was happening in Attack on Titan, it doesn't seem so simple anymore. It actually starts to feel a bit messed up.
Getting Rid of the "Wrong" People Quietly
The thing is, not everyone could join the Scouts. Most of them were people who didn’t like how things were inside the walls. People who asked too many questions or wanted something more. Eren Yeager wasn’t quiet about how much he hated being trapped. Erwin Smith was too smart and too curious. These are the types who would’ve been a problem for the government.
But instead of fighting them directly, they were just sent out on “missions” that basically always went wrong. Everyone knew those expeditions didn’t end well. Still, the Scouts kept getting called brave and noble. But what if that was exactly the point? Send the loud ones away and let the Titans deal with them. No drama. No rebellion.
The Hope Everyone Wanted But It Wasn’t That Simple
Even when they failed again and again, people still called the Scouts “hope.” But looking at what they actually achieved before the year 850, it wasn’t much. If the leaders truly wanted them to win, they could have given more weapons, more soldiers, and better plans. Instead, they barely got anything. Meanwhile, the Military Police stayed comfy behind the walls.
So maybe the goal wasn’t to win. Maybe the goal was to make sure people still believed someone was trying. If the Scouts kept going out and dying, it reminded folks how dangerous the outside world was. And the message was simple: stay inside and stay quiet. Don’t think about freedom too much, it’ll only get you killed.

Things did shift when Erwin took charge and Eren’s Titan powers were revealed. The government had no choice but to get involved. But by that time, the truth was already known. The Scouts were never really supported. They were useful symbols, not real hope.
The worst part was that the ones who joined truly believed in what they were doing. They wanted to help. They weren’t fooled by lies; they believed the lie so strongly that it became part of who they were. In the end, it wasn’t the Titans who crushed them. It was the system. It used their courage to keep control and called it loyalty.
