GATE Season 2 Announced After 10 Years with New Sea Battles and Military Fantasy
GATE 2: Tides of Conflict brings new sea battles and characters after a 10-year gap, with Studio M2 leading the return of the popular fantasy anime

After a very long time, GATE is finally getting a new season. The first anime came out way back in 2015, and now, more than ten years later, there’s finally news again. The new season is called GATE Season 2: Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri — in English, that means GATE 2: Tides of Conflict. For fans who have waited this long, it's an exciting moment. But this time, the action won’t be on land much, it’s going to happen at sea.
Now the story is focused on Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force. That means, instead of tanks and planes, we are going to see big ships, sea battles, and maybe some serious moments again in this fantasy kind of world. They say the new season won’t only be about fighting — there will be political tension also. So, not only explosions but also serious talking stuff. And this time, the animation is done by Studio M2. They also work on PLUTO, which looked super nice.

A New Team, But Familiar Writing Returns to GATE Season 2
Even though Studio M2 is kind of new to this franchise, the people working on the anime have experience. The director is Toru Takahashi. He’s not worked on GATE before, but the script will still be written by Tatsuhiko Urahata — the same person from Season 1. So maybe it’ll still feel the same in how it’s told. Character design is being handled by Shigeru Fujita. Also, GENCO is helping with the production stuff behind the scenes.
Some new characters also are being added. Their names sound a bit grand and dramatic — like Tokushima Hajime, Edajima Goro, Primera Luna Avion, Odette Ze Nebula, and Shura No Arch. We don’t know much about them yet, but maybe they play key roles this time around.
From the Gate in Tokyo to Battles on Water
Back then, GATE started as a light novel by Takumi Yanai. He wrote them first from around 2006 to 2008, and then AlphaPolis took it and kept publishing until 2015. There were even more stories, sequels, and prequels that came later, starting from 2017. The anime itself really got attention when Sentai Filmworks brought it out.

The first season had a wild story, a mysterious gate opens in Tokyo, and out comes dragons, monsters, and knights from another world. Then, somehow, Itami, who’s kind of just a normal otaku guy, becomes the hero and goes through the gate with Japan’s military. It was a mix of fantasy, war, and odd humor that a lot of people liked.
Now the new season will go beyond land and start showing ocean battles instead. No date is set yet for when GATE 2 will air, but they said more info will come out soon on the Oshi website. Seems like they’re trying to keep the same feel, but also bring something new. Hopefully, it works out, and fans will love jumping back into this world after so long.
