Historical Fantasy Anime Shabake Reveals Cast, Trailer, and Release Date
Shabake anime adaptation debuts October 2025, featuring Edo-era mystery, spirit guardians, a new trailer, cast reveal, and music by whaledontsleep

A new anime is on the way, and it’s got people talking. Shabake, which is based on a fantasy novel that’s been around for a long time, just gave new updates. There’s now a trailer, a new key visual, and the team also shared the release time — it’s coming in October 2025.
The animation will be handled by Bandai Namco Pictures, also called BN Pictures. The director of the show is Takahiro Okawa. This anime was already announced back in November 2024, but now we know better who is doing what.
Main character Ichitaro will be voiced by Daiki Yamashita. He was revealed earlier. But now, two more cast members are known — Koji Okino will voice Nikichi, and Taku Yashiro will voice Sasuke. All three characters also appear in the new visual, which shows a bit of the style and the mood of the story.
The writing part of the anime will be handled by Toko Machida. Character designs are being done by Akari Minagawa. Music will come from Ichizuka Rei. The theme song at the beginning of the anime is called “Inochi no Parade,” and it’s sung by whaledontsleep. You can already hear it in the new trailer.
A Sick Boy, Edo Period, and Strange Murders
The story of Shabake takes place long ago, during the Edo era. Ichitaro is a young master of a big shop called Nagasakiyama in Nihonbashi. But he’s not strong. He was always weak from birth. Because of that, spirits are always around to protect him.
One night, he goes outside without telling anyone and sees a murder happen. After that, other strange killings start happening all over Edo. Ichitaro gets pulled into the mystery and decides to find the truth. But he won’t do it alone — the spirits who follow him are also there to help.
It’s a mix of historical setting and fantasy style. There’s mystery too, and a lot of traditional Japanese feeling in it.

The original Shabake novels were written by Megumi Hatanaka and drawn by Yu Shibata. They have been published since 2001 by Shinchosha, and there are 23 volumes now. There was also a manga by Mimori. It ran from 2017 to 2023 in a magazine called Monthly Comic Bunch.
As October gets closer, more fans are getting interested in what Shabake will offer. With its quiet lead character, old Japan setting, and magical spirits, it might feel different from other anime. And maybe that’s the reason why it could stand out when it finally airs.
