The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim to Stream on JioHotstar in India from May 13
Stream The War of the Rohirrim on JioHotstar India from May 13 — a Middle-earth anime prequel.

Indian viewers can soon watch The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim starting from May 13, 2025, on JioHotstar. This fantasy animated movie, a prequel to the mythical Middle-earth tale, explores the dark past of Rohan. It will be part of the platform's basic subscription. Those who cannot wait can already find the film up for rent on Prime Video.
The anime is crafted by Kenji Kamiyama, who is the director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The anime takes place two centuries earlier than in The Lord of the Rings and in The Hobbit.. It features King Helm Hammerhand, an evil king of Rohan, voiced by Brian Cox. His irresponsible leadership sparks a fatal war with the Dunlendings. Gaia Wise provides the voice of Héra, his daughter, who is shown to be a courageous and clever warrior during the Hornburg — also Helm's Deep — siege.
Miranda Otto reprises for the franchise as Éowyn, also acting as the narrator in this film. Lorraine Ashbourne also appears as Olwyn, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, and Laurence Ubong Williams as Fréaláf Hildeson.
Directed by Warner Bros. and Sola Entertainment in association with New Line Cinema and WingNut Films, the film provides a closer examination of a legendary character largely missing from Tolkien's primary stories. The animation style combines traditional anime with visual motifs based on Peter Jackson's movies.
Even though its December 2024 theatrical run brought moderate box office yields — some $20.5 million on a $30 million budget — the movie has attracted a devoted audience. Its emotional complexity, rich world-building, and aesthetic presentation have won fans despite early backlash.
