‘Uglymug, Epicfighter’ Anime Slated for July Debut
Disfigured man gains power in a harsh fantasy world—action, magic, and dark humor collide.

The new TV anime Uglymug, Epicfighter, which is an adaptation of Ryō Hiromatsu's Busamen Gachi Fighter, will premiere on July 6. This was announced by a new promotional video on the official website of the anime. The anime will be broadcast at 11:30 p.m. on Tokyo MX.
Junichi Suwabe plays the main character Shigeru Yoshioka, Konomi Inagaki as Seika, Kento Shiraishi as Seiji, and Maaya Uchida as Leeds.
Toshiyuki Sone, with experience on Haikyu!! To The Top and BASTARD!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-, will be helming the anime at studio White Fox. Scriptwriting is entrusted to Kenta Ihara, known for work on Ishura and Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-. Miki Matsumoto, who has experience on Angels of Death and Summer Time Rendering, is overseeing character design. Production is taken care of by EGG FIRM.
Supporting personnel includes Ryōki Matsumura (Studio Pablo) as art direction supervisor, Staoko Kimura as color designer, and Nozomi Shitara (T2 Studio) in charge of photography. Kumiko Taniguchi (Team Taniguchi) is the special effects supervisor, while Masayuki Kurosawa is the editor. Kōhei Yoshida is the sound director, with Ryo Kawasaki providing the musical composition. Nippon Columbia is credited with music production.
The anime is based on a manga translation of Hiromatsu's web novel, illustrated by Osamu Kozuki and distributed worldwide by Square Enix's Manga UP! under the name Uglymug, Epicfighter. The narrative revolves around Shigeru, a maimed former salesman who is whisked away to a world of fantasy where his deformed face conceals titanic power. With a cursed body that torments him for bodily contact, he embarks on a powerful and bizarre journey.
The first manga ran monthly in Monthly Big Gangan between 2017 and 2020 and reached six volumes. The novel debuted online between 2015 and 2022 on the platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Only one published volume was brought out by Kobunsha in 2018.

The series features fantasy, action, and black humor and has attracted interest as an unorthodox heroine with a very progressive style of writing.
