Sony has just announced the second version of its PlayStation Virtual Reality (PSVR) headset on the global stage. The company is calling this new version of the headset, PSVR 2.0 and it is meant to work with the latest, PlayStation 5. PSVR 2.0 announcement outlines that the product is not coming this year. Instead, it is slated to launch in 2022 as the “next-generation VR system” from Sony. The announcement comes just months after the company launched the PS5 series in the market and about a month after the India launch. The announcement states that the headset aims to deliver the “ultimate entertainment experience” to buyers. In addition, we also got to know some information around the design of the upcoming hardware along with the performance. Hideaki Nishino, the Senior Vice President in the Global Product Strategy and Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment issues a statement as part of the launch. Nishino stated that the PSVR 2.0 will offer “dynamic leaps in performance”. He also noted that the players will feel an “even greater sense of presence”.

Sony stated that the PSVR 2.0 will feature a single cord as the connection between the headset and the console. This means that it won’t be wireless as some other VR headsets in the market. The upcoming version will improve upon the resolution, field of view, tracking, and input when compared to the current version. Beyond this, we have no information on the actual design of the headset. PSVR 2.0 will also come with a new VR controller that will take some features from the DualSense controller. In addition to the feature-set, the new controller will also offer “great ergonomics”. Sony noted that it is working on PSVR 2.0 to ensure that it works with future VR games.

Nishino went on to add that the company decided to announce the PSVR 2.0 to ensure that PlayStation 5 customers know that new hardware is coming soon. The development community has already started work on the upcoming headset. In addition, Nishino also reaffirmed that Sony is committed to supporting VR in the future.
