The Laughing Salesman Live-Action Coming to Prime Video
The Laughing Salesman live-action series premieres July 18 on Amazon Prime, bringing dark, original tales of twisted desires and moral consequences to life

It’s finally happening—The Laughing Salesman, the old dark and creepy manga, is being made into a live-action TV series. Amazon Prime Video in Japan will start streaming it from July 18. It’s co-produced with TV Tokyo, and the series will have 12 episodes. All of them will be brand-new stories, made just for this version, and set in today’s Reiwa era.
The new version keeps the main story: Moguro Fukuzou appears to help people who feel empty. He gives them what they want the most—completely free. But if they lie, cheat, or don’t follow his rules—things go bad. Even though he always smiles, there’s something dark hidden behind it.

They haven’t said yet who’s playing Moguro, but that’ll be announced on June 25 at 7 p.m. JST. So fans won’t have to wait long to see who’s stepping into those spooky shoes.
Many Talents In One Show
There are four directors on board—Masaaki Itō, Yōhei Osabe, Daisuke Yamamoto, and Shōta Sasaki. The writing’s being handled by a pretty mixed group: Kankurō Kudō, Magy, Tōru Hosokawa, and Udai Iwasaki. So it’s not just one style. Each episode might hit a little different, which fits the story’s vibe.

The manga first came out from 1969 to 1971, written by Fujiko Fujio A—real name Motoo Abiko, who helped create Doraemon. It ran in Manga Sunday and was known for its mix of dark humor and moral lessons. Over the years, it’s been turned into an anime in the late '80s, a drama in 1999, another anime in 2017, and even a stage play in 2021. So this story’s been haunting people for decades.

This time, the setting is new and the stories are fresh, but the feeling is still just as strong. Moguro’s offers still come with a smile and a twist. If you like seeing characters face the results of their own choices—and sometimes fail badly—this show could be perfect for you.
