Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC revealed alongside patch 1.6 release

Keanu Reeves returns to play Johnny Silverhand but sadly, not on current-gen consoles.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be receiving its first DLC in 2023 called Phantom Liberty. The trailer for it shows protagonist V taking an oath of allegiance to serve the New United States. Keanu Reeves, who plays Johnny Silverhand, returns to Cyberpunk 2077 as we hear him saying it’s a “bad idea” to take that oath. For those unaware, Silverhand is the ghost that lives in the head of V and if your inner voice says it’s a bad idea, it might as well be true.

Phantom Liberty DLC

However, there’s lots of new content to explore with this upcoming DLC so it’s perhaps worth it, Johnny. For starters, there will be a new electric whip as a weapon for players as well as new areas added to the city to explore. While the trailer has given us our first look at the upcoming DLC, fans would still have to wait until next year to get their hands on it. CD Projekt Red (CDPR) confirmed earlier this year that the expansion to Cyberpunk 2077 will not be arriving before 2023.

Until then, fans of Cyberpunk 2077 can watch the new spinoff anime series called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Set in the same universe, it will be available to watch on Netflix starting September 13th. CDPR will be celebrating the launch of their anime series through a new update in the game. It will feature content inspired by the show and it has also added a new tool called REDmod which is designed to make modding in the game easier for players.

Phantom Liberty DLC only for next-gen

While the official tool to encourage modding is a welcomed move, there's disappointing news as well. The upcoming DLC will only be for next-gen consoles and PC, as announced by CDPR. Game director Gabriel Amatangelo said, “We’re really excited about it. It’s a new style of plot we’re having fun with.” He also addressed the new 1.6 update and mentioned that it will be “last major update for the old-gen consoles. Going forward a hugely requested feature from the community is coming up, and that’s a complete overhaul to the cop system as well as vehicle-to-vehicle combat. It gives you a whole new feel and dimension and immersion to the city.”

Netflix's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is "100% canon"

Edegerunners producer Bartosz Sztybor has confirmed that the show is “100% canon” in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077. He added, “It’s the same city. Same streets, same cars, same guns”. Even characters from the game do show up in Edgerunners but he did not reveal further information about it. Guess we’ll just have to tune in to find out. There’s also an English dubbed trailer released for Edgerunners. This dub of the earlier NSFW trailer also confirms that there will be an English dub for the entire series.
