Game developer and publisher Epic Games has just shared information about a new acquisition in its latest announcement. According to the announcement, it has just acquired “Capturing Reality”, one of the leading developers in the field of Photogrammetry. Epic Games will integrate the Photogrammetry software that Capturing Reality makes in its Unreal Engine suite of game development tools. For some context, Capturing Reality makes “RealityCapture”, a Photogrammetry software that works with 3D scans. The company also re-emphasized that it will continue to support existing users of Capturing Reality post the acquisition. Before we talk about the details around the acquisition, let’s focus on the term Photogrammetry. According to the information available online, Photogrammetry is a field of science and technology dedicated at getting information about physical objects in the real world. It relies on photographic images, recording, and even measuring the objects. The tech also uses patterns found in the “electromagnetic radiant imagery” and more to refine the information. Coming back, RealityCapture, the software “is able to reconstruct objects and scenes of any size from images and laser scans”. In the end, the user gets a 3D scan of the scene or object which is both high-quality and accurate.

Epic Games stated that the team from Capturing Reality will “work closely” with the development team behind Unreal Engine. As part of this close cooperation, Epic Games will likely make the Photogrammetry technology more affordable and accessible to game developers. After the integration, Epic Games hopes to make the experience of creating photo-realistic 3D models as easy as possible. Teddy Bergsman, the Senior Director for Quixel at Epic Games shared a statement as part of the announcement. Bergsman stated, “RealityCapture is the clear market leader in Photogrammetry and has been integral to the creation of Quixel Megascans since its inception.”

Marc Petit, the General Manager for Unreal Engine added, “The Capturing Reality team is made up of some of the most impressive experts in the field of Photogrammetry.”  Michal Jancosek, the Co-founder of Capturing Reality noted, “Our mission at Capturing Reality is to give our customers the most powerful and easy-to-use photogrammetry solution on the market, so they have the freedom to focus on their business”.
